Firefox 3.7 to a Get Chrome-like Page and Tools Menu

Firefox 3.7 Mockup

Mozilla’s intention to revamp the Firefox design starting with Firefox 3.7 is by now a public affair. Firefox 3.7 for Windows Vista and Windows 7 will be the first to get this new visual appearance, Mac and Linux will follow suit. Firefox 3.7, scheduled for release in March 2010 will systematically drop the Menu Bar for a more “organized” two buttons “Page” and “Tools” that will give Firefox 3.7 a Chrome look. Mozilla puts it this way: “Hclassing the Menu Bar by default on Vista and Windows 7 allows us to use Glass, free up vertical space and retain platform consistency. Combining Stop and Reload into one button reduces visual “clutter” and combines two buttons that have mutually exclusive functionality.” The Home Button in the default toolbar will also be moved to a new unsuspected position: the tab area. VLC 1.0.2 Security and Maintenance Update

vlc-logo.jpg

The popular open source media player VLC gets a maintenance release to fix bugs found in previously released VLC 1.0.1. VLC 1.0.1 that was rolled out about two months ago had a number of bugs and security vulnerabilities that have been fixed in VLC 1.0.2. VLC 1.0.2 fixes issues in subtitles, Theora video compression format and Ogg, it addresses dvb-c channels-scanning and fixes some playlist sorting issues.

Mac OS X Port users benefit most from this update that addresses issues like, VLC crashing during an update, a newly added “Quit after Playback” feature and a full 64bit runtime compatibility on both Mac OS X 10.5 and 10.6 amongst other feature. See the changelog.

Because of the security issues addressed in this release, the VLC team strongly recommends everyone to update to VLC 1.0.2.
VLC is released under the GNU General Public License (GPLv2).

Firefox: Seamlessly Update your Twitter Status and Get Updates with Echofon (TwitterFox) Add-on

Echofon Firefox Add-on

Why use another Twitter application when the Twitter teams keeps rolling out design tweaks for its web version? I no longer find it necessary to get a “”full fleshed” and often bulky Twitter application with all the new features the web browser version offers.

Twitter fans who use the web browsers for tweeting like Firefox can further boost up their Twitter experience with Greasemonkey and user-scripts (Opera users can try Emulate Greasemonkey Functions to boost Twitter). If Twitter for you means using a Twitter-focused application to update your status and view those of your Twitter friends (and not integrating MySpace, or updating to Facebook) then you can also pick-up an add-on, a Firefox extension called Echofon (formerly known as TwitterFox ) to bring some of those features you might miss in “full fleshed” Twitter clients like dedicated columns for tweets from “All Friends”, “Replies” and “Direct messages”.

When installed it puts a tiny icon on Firefox status bar that notifies you when your Twitter contacts post tweets, replies, mentions -- if the “Show pop-up” feature is activated.
-- You can easily update your Twitter status with a drag n’ drop. Select the text and drop it into the Echofon interface.
-- All clicked links open-up in new tabs. Echofon also manages multiple Twitter accounts. More»
