The Ubuntu development team has just released the sixth and last Alpha version of the upcoming Ubuntu 9.10 a.k.a Karmic Koala, due for release in late October this year.

– Usplash — the boot splash screen has been taken-off.
– The Ubuntu Software Store application is now available under the System menu.

Use a Greasemonkey script konwn as “Greasemonkey Scripts for Google Search” to personalize Google’s homepage and replace the traditional logo with a doodle of your choice. It seems newly released Opera 10 for Linux has dropped the word “page” from Opera command-line flags. Previous versions of Opera –newpage and –backgroundpage flags that have become –newtab and –backgroundtab respectively in Opera 10. Its only a renomination, their functions are the same. BTW the “page” flags are not yet obsolete. A new entry in the list of flags is the –activetab that opens a link in the current tab.
-newtab open link in new tab (default behavior)
-activetab open link in current tab
-backgroundtab open link in background tab

GnoMenu the eye-candy, theme-driven Applications Menu for the Gnome desktop is now available in the Launchpad repository so you can get updates directly from your Update Manager.
For Ubuntu 9.04 users:
Add to your /etc/apt/sources.list and get notified when updates/upgrades are available.

Drop into System -> Administration -> Software Sources -> Other Software the following line: ppa:gnomenu-team/ppa, install with sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install gnomenu Add to Panel -> GnoMenu. Built on Python, GnoMenu is released under the GNU/GPL License.

My Ubuntu 9.04 “Jaunty” will soon explode with the growing number of web browsers I dump into it each day and punctually each newly installed web browser has this message when you run it the very first time run it; “Make me your default browser”. I just ignore the message cause I’m never really sure which browser should be the default --at times i change the default twice, thrice a day. The easy way to do it on my Ubuntu is from the command-line, its faster and easier than using the GUI tool. More»
