The good news is that the Calendar Project has finally delivered the standalone cross-platform calendar application Sunbird 1.0 beta 1, the bad news is that its going to be the last release of Sunbird from the Calendar Project – the team will focus its development efforts entirely on the Lightning extension that tightly integrates Mozilla’s Sunbird calendar into the cross-platform desktop email client Thunderbird. It took the team 18 months and nearly 500 bug fixes to get Sunbird 1.0 beta 1 out.

Ubuntu 10.10 that will be out in October 2010 has been codenamed Maverick Meerka. Mark Shuttleworth made the announcement on his blog, where he also announced pertinent changes in this upcoming release cycle.
This is a time of change, and we’re not afraclass to surprise people with a bold move if the opportunity for dramatic improvement presents itself. We want to put Ubuntu and free software on every single consumer PC that ships from a major manufacturer, the ultimate maverick move. We will deliver on time, but we have huge scope for innovation in what we deliver this cycle. Once we have released the LTS we have plenty of room to shake things up a little. Let’s hear the best ideas, gather the best talent, and be a little radical in how we approach the next two year major cycle.

Mozilla has released a Firefox update that patches a security vulnerability in Firefox 3.6.2 web browser. This vulnerability was discovered and exploited during the Pwn2Own competition that challenges hackers to break the latest versions of the most popular web browsers – Firefox and Internet Explorer 8 on Windows 7, and Safari on Mac OS X, were hacked. Simmbook netbook is the result of a partnership between Simmtronics, IBM and Canonical. Simmtronics brought to the table its netbook, that needs publicity, IBM
came along with it’s Client for Smart Work, including Lotus Symphony and various cloud-based services – Canonical drops the OS, the netbook will run on Ubuntu Netbook Remix.
Designed specifically for mobile computing, Simmbook netbook has standard netbook specifications, its equipped with a 1.6 GHz Intel Atom N270 processor, 1GB RAM, 160GB HDD, a 1.3 megapixel camera, 10-inch display, three-cell battery, more specs Here
The Simmbook will be initially available off-the-shelf in African countries, India, Thailand and Vietnam, with other countries to follow. Its price tag just $190 is also symbolic – Simmbook tries to get low-cost computing into emerging markets.

Jolicloud, the Ubuntu based Linux distribution for netbooks is now HTML5 ready, the Jolicloud team ditched Mozilla Prism web app rendering engine for a customized version of Chromium with HTML5 capabilities, and h.264 video codec support. They named their customized Chromium ‘Nickel’ and freed its source codes. More»
