The second and final beta of Ubuntu ‘Lucid Lynx’ 10.04 LTS has been released. If you’ve got a partition with Ubuntu 10.04 beta 1 installed, then updates will soon be available via the Update Manager.
Whats comes in this new pack: Well easy to verify is the presence of Gnome 2.30 desktop environment that comes with many new exciting features, the new Ubiquity slideshow and with Google as Search Provider and not Yahoo!. The open source application launcher, Launchy has made it to version 2.5, with a few changes but for the first time it has released a version for the Mac OS X platform.
The keystroke-driven launcher v2.5 comes with bug fixes, faster performance, new shortcuts and new controls to try out; Shift+tab or Shift+bkspc deletes entered search text. Shift+Ctrl+Enter launches apps in elevated mode on Vista and Win7. When no current search text is entered, use the down arrow to show the history. The default skin is now built into executable in case no other skin is found.
The release notes also claims Launchy’s performance on Linux desktops has been improved, I’ve tried it on on Ubuntu 10.04 and I have no remarks but a remark – only the default skin loads well. Cross-platform Launchy 2.5 is available to download for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X. It is also portable (Windows-only), you can use it to launch apps on-the-go from a portable USB drive. Launchy is released under the GNU General Public License .

A few days ago the Songbird team announced that they were no longer going to build Songbird officially for Linux desktops and, promised that they’ll continue to release untested Linux builds of Songbird.
As it often happens with dropped open source projects, someone sooner or later grabs the opportunity – a group of Songbird contributors and enthusiasts has announced that they’ll continue to build Songbird, under the name Nightingale.
So here we are, Songbird is no more supporting Linux platform, so wedecided to create our own version, supporting Linux first, but also Windows and Mac OS X later…
We had a long debate for the name of our project, and it’s now chosen : Nightingale.
Not much is available right now, no download-able packages of Nightingale are available – there’s a wiki, a blog, and a forum. Good Luck!!!
